A contractor is someone who agrees to provide materials and labor services for a specific price. There are different types of contractors for each trade and general contractors can hire other "sub" contractors to complete projects that require multiple trade skills to complete.  It is often necessary to find a contractor to perform work on your house. There are some basic precautions you should take before you hire a contractor.

There are a number of ways to determine which contractor you should hire. There are a number of companies that offer remodeling services who will recommend a contractor for the job. Ask your relatives, friends and co-workers if they can recommend a contractor who has done work for them. You can also search for contractors through a local builder's association, etc..

You should always check the referrences of a prospective contractor. Call their customers and ask them if they are happy with the work that was done by the contractor and if they would hire the same contractor again for future projects.

Get quotes from atleast three different contractors. Carefully compare any quotes that you receive to  make sure they are the same and nothing is left out. Never assume that the lowest priced quote is the best one.

Make usre you have a written contract which specifies the start and end dates of the project. Some contractors will provide a timeline for larger projects which can help you plan, especially when there are several people coming in and out of your home and opporating dangerous equipment.

Finally make sure that the contractor you chose is licensed, bonded and insured.
